Module of 128 (16x8) RGB LEDs with pluggable Controller
Update: 2012-12-16 Both, the pre-assembled LED-Boards as well as the pre-assembled SMD-Driver board are now available through agile-hardware.
Before we started this project we built three LED matrices by hand consisting of more than one thousand RGB LEDs. Each LED (5 mm) was placed, wired and soldered by hand. Even though it was fun at the beginning it was the most time consuming and sometimes stultifying part of each project. And even after the third project we were not able to improve our technique any further and thus we had to come up with something different. This new concept needed to be scalable, modular, affordable and compatible to the Universal Matrix Controller Boards. And this is what we come up with:
We designed a PCB with 128 (8x16) RGB LEDs (PLCC-6) with a pitch of 2 cm. The whole wiring is already done and is following the usual pattern - all anodes are connected in each row and all colors in each column. The 16x3 colors and 8 rows are fed out on 4 connectors at the back side of each board. This doesn't only saves you a lot of time but it also comes with one important feature. The pin layout of one LED Matrix matches to a slightly modified version of our Universal Matrix Controller Boards.
The modified Matrix Controller Board is technically identical to the original version and even the firmware is unchanged. But nearly all components are now SMD devices and the position of the color and row connectors have slightly changed. The latter was due to constraints by the matrix design. This means that unfortunately the original Matrix Controllers cannot be simply plugged at the back side of the Matrix Board. But the new SMD Edition does!
